The Origins of Airmail in China & Hong Kong 1919-1922

The only suitable provisional starting and landing place for aeroplanes is the military camp at Feng Huang Shan, 5 miles outside the North Gate of the City. CANTON As far as aeroplanes are concerned throughout the whole of the province of Kuangtung there are admirable pieces of land which can be very easily adapted as aerodromes, particularly along the banks of the several rivers running into the Delta. However, on account of the flooding, some steps would have to be taken to build embankments in a number of places, but in spite of this there are several huge tracts of land above the high water mark. I particularly refer to the district around Sheklung where there are some extraordinarily dry flat areas. In the vicinity of Canton there are several good grounds. Going north along Yueh Han Railway track on either side landing grounds can be arranged. Between Canton and Samshui at practically any spot an aerodrome can be selected. There is one particularly good spot to the west of Samshui at the back of the timber yards. This is an ideal spot as it is all open country. HANKOW The surrounding country is not very suitable for aeroplanes owing to the soft nature of the ground. Aerodromes could, however, be constructed without very much difficulty. The country is very flat, bare of trees, houses and other obstacles to enforced landings; telegraph wires and fences are practically non-existent. ICHANG The only flat spaces which might be used for aeroplanes’ starting and landing places are:- The Railway Yard at the Ichang Railway Station. The Railway Goods Yard.
