The Origins of Airmail in China & Hong Kong 1919-1922

A cargo service can only be operated when carrying valuable goods. Aerial service can only be a success when flying between two highly developed centres. Aeroplanes already begin to compare with automobiles for long distance transport. (South China Morning Post) 26 NOVEMBER 1920 A unique vessel the Hydreslider was to leave Shanghai on November 24th.by the steamer Waishing for Hankow where it will be used in an attempt to maintain quick transportation service between Chungking and Tchang. The Hydreslider is a shallow draft craft drawing about eight inches and driven by aeroplane propellers which can give it a speed of 32 miles an hour if necessary. With this new craft the Compagnie de Transport Aeriens ou Fluviaux du Szechuan will carry out tests which may eventually lead to the establishment of a regular service of such vessels between Chungking, Tchang and Chengtu. (South China Morning Post) 26 NOVEMBER 1920 The Cabinet has sanctioned the inauguration of an air service between Peking and Shanghai, with three intermediate stations and eighty landing grounds. It is hoped that after carrying the mails for six months a public service will have been secured which will carry both passenger and goods traffic. (Reuter Peking)
