THE PERSIAN AIR MAIL

AIR ROUTE AHWAZ-DUZDAP The route has been selected to follow as nearly as possible motorable roads in case of forced landings. There would appear to be little difficulty in the 1st and 3rd stages. The stage SHIRAZ-KIRMAN looks difficult as it involves crossing two mountain ranges about 10,000 feet high. It looks therefore as if the route would have to be flown at about 12,000 - 13,000 feet. There is no difficulty as regards drinking water throughout the route as far as FEHRUJ (Stage 3), water being available from streams and wells at frequent intervals on the road. Between FEHRUJ and DUZDAP water generally is of limited quantity and brackish. Stage 1 AHWAZ-SHIRAZ 260 miles. Via RAMUZ-BEHBEHAN & BASHT Place Approx. height Max. height in stage Distance to next place Remarks AHWAZ 70 RAMUZ BEHBEHAN 1300 BASHT 3000 SHIRAZ 5200 7300 50 60 54 Road for light cars 96 - Description Leaving AHWAZ which stands in a bare plain with patches of cultivation, the route follows a grassy plain, liable to become swampy after rain to RAMUZ where there is cultivation in the plain to the SE. Open plain continues to Sultanabad intersected with mullahs. After this the plain is cultivated and irrigated. The valley of the MARUN is now followed to BEHBEHAN. From BEHBEHAN the route runs across rough and hilly country broken up by ravines, and passes over the wooded gorge of the R.KHAS by RUDIAN. Apart from the last-mentioned obstacle, forced landing grounds probably fairly easy to choose. Communication Telegraph from AHWAZ to SHIRAZ, from SHIRAZ to BUSHIRE and ISFAHAN, BEHBEHAN to BANDER DILAM, AHWAZ to MUHAMMERAH. Road Fit for light cars only. The track between AHWAZ and RAMUZ is liable to become swampy and impassable after rain. Numerous nala beds and the R.MARUN are fordable with difficulty. In floods the MARUN can be crossed only by raft. On to BEHBEHAN the road runs across a cultivated and irrigated plain where several nalas and the R.JIHUN are difficult for wheels.
